August 2010 Meeting

The Technique Solar Module ~

(Making Solar Energy Affordable For All)

Who: Ian Bates

During a long career with the former State Electricity Commission, Ian held the position of General Manager of Power Transmission. In 1989, he joined RMIT University where he was Professor of Electrical Engineering and as Associate Dean R&D, led the build up of R&D in the Faculty of Engineering. Ian joined Technique Solar Ltd in September 2009 as Technical Team Leader to commercialise solar energy research developed under his leadership whilst at RMIT. In 1984, Ian was awarded a Centennial Medal by the USA Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) 'for contributions to power systems control deserving of special recognition'.

Currently, solar energy supplies less than 0.5% of Australia's electrical energy needs at a cost in the order of 60 cents/kWhr. The Technique Solar Module (TSM) can change this and increase the utilisation of solar energy to some 20% of the growth in electrical energy supply over the next decade, without cost penalties. Solar energy at a 'fixed price' of 20-25 cents/kWhr, will make it competitive with 'grid delivered energy' and is now a real possibility of being available in all people's homes.
